Green gram, commonly known as Moong, is a very healthy pulse to consume. The entire moong gram is green in colour and can be cooked whole or even sprouted to enhance its nutritional content. Moong dal is also available in the split variety with the husk still on the dal. Yellow moong is the split variety with the husk removed. It’s one side is flat and the other rounded. This is faster to cook and easier to digest.

Moong dal is a pulse which is popular with those who are concerned about their health and those who wish to shed weight with a healthy diet. Moong is a rich source of non-animal protein, dietary fibre and various other nutrients. Split moong dal contains vitamins and minerals such as potassium, calcium, vitamins B, C, E and K.

The fibre content in Moong aids in digestion. It is a heart healthy pulse as it has no cholesterol and it is also consumed by diabetics as it has no sugar content. The various nutrients in moong helps maintain the tissues and also fights cellular aging.

PR 124 PADDY
To address the declining ground water issue and to ensure that farmers are economically benefitted from the paddy season, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) experts say farmers must sow its latest paddy variety 'PR 124' released this year after five-year research on it.
It is disease resistant, can save about 10% water, takes only 135 days to mature and its yield per acre is higher as compared to various other paddy varieties.
It is a disease resistant variety which can save farmers from low yield. Thirdly and most importantly, the yield per acre will be 30.5 quintals per acre,"said Rajinder Kaur Kalra, head of extension education department, PAU, whose department is currently running campgains across the state to make farmers aware of the benefits of this new variety.

Paddy PR 123 variety



Ludhiana: The ‘PR 123’ variety of superfine rice which was released by Punjab Agricultural University last year is fast replacing the old variety ‘PR 111’ in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran (Punjab) and Haryana. Dr Balwinder Singh, director, research, said it was a semi-dwarf, disease resistant variety with dark green erect leaves. “It matures in 143 days after seeding. 

It possesses extra-long slender (L/B ratio of 3.73), clear translucent grains with excellent cooking and eating quality characteristics,” he added. The variety resists the attack of all 10 presently prevalent pathotypes of bacterial blight pathogen in Punjab.
Dr VP Singh, the breeder of ‘Basmati 1121’ said: “The variety will set new milestones in future in non-basmati exports’ category. In the last two years, India has exported around 7.0 million tonnes of non-basamti rice.

Dr GS Mangat, senior rice breeder, PAU, said though the average paddy yield of the variety was 2.0 quintal per acre higher than the ‘PR 111’ variety, some farmers in the districts of Sri Muktsar Sahib and Ferozepur obtained 90-100 maunds of paddy from an acre. “The variety is proving beneficial to the farmers on account of its higher paddy yield, shorter maturity period and disease resistance and to the traders due to excellent quality characteristics,” he added. —TNS
